        Helinox

The Chair One reset what a packable camp chair could be, and a decade of copies has not really caught up. The DAC alloy poles keep the frame light without the wobble you get from cheaper clones, and the joints hold after years of use. The only real complaint is price, since the knockoffs sell for a fraction and look close enough at a glance.

The pricing makes no sense on paper and the gear still sells, which tells you something. Stainless and titanium pieces survive years of abuse and somehow look better worn than new, and the repair policy is generous enough that buying once is a reasonable plan. The weight rules most of it out for backpacking, so treat this as car camping gear you keep for a decade.

        Hilleberg

If you are spending a night on an exposed ridge in real wind, the shortlist gets very short. Kerlon fabric and the pole geometry are built to flex instead of fail, and the tents shed snow load without deforming. The catch is that a single shelter costs more than most people spend on their entire kit, which is hard to justify for campground weekends. Rated for a specific job and excellent at it.

        REI Co-op

The in-house line is the easiest recommendation for someone buying their first real kit. Prices land below the specialist brands, the tents are genuinely well designed rather than merely cheap, and the return policy removes the risk of guessing wrong. You will outgrow some of it if you get serious about weight, but nothing here will ruin a trip.

        MSR

Liquid fuel stoves are where this brand earned its reputation, and the WhisperLite still runs in cold and altitude that make canister stoves sputter. The Hubba Hubba is a sensible three-season tent with a smart pole layout. Field maintenance takes more fiddling than most people want, and the tent fabrics have drawn durability complaints, so B feels right.

        Coleman

The gear that gets a family through a few weekends a year without anyone thinking hard about it. Parts are easy to find, the setup instructions actually work, and nothing costs enough to hurt when it wears out. The tradeoff is weight and materials that show their price, so anyone who camps often tends to move on. Still a fine place to start.
