  Arc'teryx

  Nobody finishes a hardshell like Arc'teryx. The taping, the seam work, the way a Beta jacket packs down and then shrugs off sideways rain — it justifies a lot of the sticker shock. The brand going streetwear-famous is a little awkward for those of us who bought it for the mountains, but the gear itself has not slipped.

  Patagonia

  Patagonia wins on the pieces you wear most: fleeces, baselayers, the R1 that refuses to die. Factor in the repair program and the resale value, and cost per year of use gets very reasonable. Hardshells trail Arc'teryx by a hair, which is the only thing keeping this out of the top row.

  Salomon

  Footwear is where Salomon plays a different sport from everyone else. Speedcross grip on wet descent is a genuine safety upgrade, and the quicklace system works better than it has any right to. Apparel is solid but forgettable, so the shoes carry the ranking — and they carry it comfortably into A.

  The North Face

  The North Face covers more ground than any brand here, from mall puffers to Summit Series pieces used on actual expeditions. That breadth cuts both ways: the top end competes with anyone, while plenty of the logo-driven mid-range coasts on name recognition. Buy from the right line and it's excellent.

  Climbers already know Mammut — the Swiss brand's ropes and harnesses are benchmark gear, and the apparel carries the same engineering-first attitude. It stays in B mostly for reach: distribution is thin outside Europe, prices run high, and the designs prioritize function over shelf appeal. The quality is never the problem.

  The Kånken backpack made Fjällräven a fashion brand, but the G-1000 trousers you re-wax yourself are the real soul of the company. This is gear for trekking and bushcraft more than alpine weather — waterproofing is not the game here, longevity is. Charming, durable, just not what I reach for when the forecast turns.

  Columbia is the honest budget answer. Omni-Heat liners genuinely add warmth for the money, outlet pricing makes entry painless, and a beginner can kit out head to toe for the cost of one premium shell. Push it on a hard route in real weather and the fabric and fit tell you where the savings came from.
