      • S

        Dolby Cinema

The first time you see a Dolby Cinema presentation the black levels do the talking. Dual laser projection gets closer to true black than anything else in a commercial room, so night scenes hold detail instead of turning to grey mush. The Atmos install wraps the seating rather than firing at it, which matters more in quiet films than in action. Screen count is the only real limitation.

      • S

        IMAX 70mm / GT

Only a handful of rooms worldwide run true 70mm film or the GT laser setup, and they are worth traveling for. The taller aspect ratio means a film shot for IMAX fills your peripheral vision in a way a wide screen never does. The problem is that most auditoriums branded IMAX are digital rooms of ordinary size, so you have to check which format you are actually buying.

      • A

        Alamo Drafthouse

The no-talking, no-texting policy is enforced rather than merely announced, which by itself makes it the most pleasant chain to watch a film in. Programming leans into repertory screenings and themed events the big chains would never book. Table service during the film is divisive since there is movement in the room, and locations are concentrated in a handful of cities.

      • A

        AMC Theatres

The widest coverage of premium formats in the country, so if a film is playing in Dolby or a genuine IMAX room, this is usually where. The A-List subscription is real value for anyone seeing more than two films a month. Quality swings a lot between locations though, and the older auditoriums have not all been renovated. Convenient and inconsistent in equal measure.

      • B

        Cinemark

The most reliably clean and well maintained of the large chains, which is an underrated quality when you are sitting somewhere for two hours. XD auditoriums are large and bright without the licensing costs of Dolby or IMAX, so ticket prices stay reasonable. There is no signature format that would make you choose it over the alternatives, which keeps it out of the top tiers.

      • C

        Regal Cinemas

4DX and ScreenX give it formats the others do not carry, and the Unlimited subscription is priced aggressively. The problem is consistency, since maintenance quality swings sharply between locations and some auditoriums have clearly gone years without attention. A good Regal is perfectly fine, but the odds of landing in one are worse than at the chains above.
