Kindle Paperwhite
Still the reference for how an e-reader should feel to use. The frontlight is even across the panel with no hotspots, page turns are quick enough that you stop noticing them, and battery life is measured in weeks. The cost is the walled garden, since books bought elsewhere need conversion and side-loading. If you buy from Amazon anyway, nothing else is easier to live with.

Onyx Boox Page
Running Android means you install whatever store apps you want, which solves the single biggest problem with every other reader. Kindle, Libby, Kobo, and local services can all sit on one device. The tradeoff is polish, since app rendering on E-Ink is uneven and you will spend time tuning refresh settings. Worth the fiddling if you buy books from more than one store.

Kobo Libra 2
Physical page turn buttons and an asymmetric grip make it noticeably more comfortable to hold one-handed than a flat slab. Native OverDrive integration means library books arrive without touching a computer, and that is the feature that sells it. The store catalog is smaller than Amazon's and the software is a step behind on responsiveness, but the hardware is excellent.
- B
PocketBook Era
Broad format support is the draw, since EPUB, PDF, and comic archives all open without conversion. The built-in speaker for audiobooks is unusual in this class and works better than expected. Availability outside Europe is patchy, so buying and servicing one often means importing. A good fit if you manage your own library files and a poor one otherwise.

Nook GlowLight
The hardware is competent and the screen is fine, but the device exists to sell Barnes & Noble books and it never lets you forget it. There is no meaningful path to reading anything bought elsewhere. With the retailer's future repeatedly in the news, betting a library on this ecosystem is a risk the alternatives do not ask you to take.

Meebook M6
A pocketable six-inch Android reader at a price that undercuts every brand above, with SD card expansion that most competitors dropped years ago. You can install the apps you need, which is rare this cheap. Build quality, frontlight evenness, and software support are all clearly a tier below, and documentation is thin. A budget option for people who enjoy tinkering.
