      • S

        Audible

The audiobook catalog is deep enough that the book you want is almost always there, and the exclusive productions with well-cast narrators are noticeably better than the average recording. The app handles speed, bookmarks, and sleep timers without fuss. The credit system is the persistent annoyance, since it obscures what you actually pay per book and unused credits create pressure to spend.

      • S

        Libby (OverDrive)

Free, legal, and it delivers straight to a Kindle or your phone, which is a combination nothing else offers. If your library system is well funded the catalog is surprisingly current. Holds on popular titles can run for months, and selection depends entirely on which library card you hold, so the experience varies by location. Nothing else here delivers more for nothing.

      • A

        Kindle Unlimited

For high-volume readers the arithmetic works quickly, and the independent publishing catalog is enormous in genres like romance, thriller, and science fiction. Rotating a few books a month covers the fee easily. Major publisher titles are largely absent, so the bestsellers you have heard of usually are not included. Excellent for readers who explore rather than chase specific books.

      • A

        Scribd (Everand)

One subscription covering ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and documents is convenient, and the mix means you rarely run out of something to read. Pricing is fair for the breadth offered. The catch has always been throttling, since heavy users find availability and recommendations quietly narrowing within a billing period. Good value with an asterisk that regular readers will eventually hit.

      • B

        Kobo Plus

A cheaper unlimited tier that works well for genre readers, particularly in romance and mystery where the catalog is deepest. Pairing it with Kobo hardware makes for a tidy setup. Availability is limited to certain countries, the catalog is smaller than Kindle Unlimited's, and the service gets far less attention and promotion. Reasonable if you already live in Kobo's ecosystem.

      • C

        BookBeat

Popular in the Nordic markets and built around audiobook-first listening, with tiers based on listening hours rather than a flat cap. Local-language catalogs in its home markets are strong. Outside Europe the English catalog is thin and the service is largely unknown, so for most readers there is no reason to choose it over the alternatives above.
