          Sennheiser

The HD 600 line has held reference status for over two decades and the reason becomes obvious after a few hours. Nothing is boosted, so first impressions are underwhelming, and then you notice you can listen all day without fatigue and that badly mastered recordings have nowhere to hide. Open backs leak sound in both directions and want amplification, which limits where you can use them.

        • S

          Sony

The WH-1000XM line solved noise cancellation and wireless convenience at the same time, which very few products manage. On a train or a plane the drop in low-frequency noise changes the experience completely. Pure sound quality loses to wired headphones at the same price, but since most headphone use happens while moving, this is the more practical package. App EQ control is a bonus.

        • A

          Bose

The most comfortable headphones here and it is not particularly close. Light clamping force and soft earpads mean glasses wearers can go two or three hours without adjusting. The tuning pushes bass generously, which rules them out for monitoring work but suits pop and hip-hop well. If the goal is wearing something for hours rather than analyzing a mix, this is the right pick.

        • A

          Audio-Technica

The ATH-M50x sits awkwardly between studio monitor and consumer headphone, and that ambiguity turns out to be the appeal. Closed backs make them usable outside, and the forward upper mids keep vocals clear. Clamping force is firm enough that larger heads will feel it over long sessions. For the price it remains one of the safest recommendations in the category.

        • B

          Beyerdynamic

German build quality is not just marketing here, since these survive years of studio abuse and most parts are replaceable. The DT 770 and 990 are fixtures in tracking rooms for good reason. The treble presentation is bright to the point of fatiguing for some listeners, and that is a genuine dividing line rather than something you adjust to. Excellent tools, specific taste.

        • B

          Focal

Driver technology is legitimately advanced and the top models resolve detail that most headphones smear together. Build and materials feel like the money went somewhere real. The problem is where the pricing lands, since the models that show off the technology cost more than most complete listening setups. Impressive engineering that ranks lower here purely on what it asks you to spend.
